Q 1) What do I need to wear for my first lesson?
A1: For all types of riding and all ages, you must wear a helmet made for riding horses (for example, not a bike helmet or skating helmet.) Horse back riding helmets are rated for specific types of impact. These types of helmets can be purchased from us directly, at many online sites, or your local tack store. The average cost is $40 for a fully adjustable helmet.
A2: For English type, riding breechs are highly recommended to prevent your legs from being rubbed. If you do not have breeches jeans are okay with tall boots or short paddock boots. We have breechs, tall boots, paddock boots, and half chaps available for purchase.
A3: For Western lessons, cowboy boots or paddock boots are fine with jeans or comfortable pants. Socks that go up to your knee inside your pants are highly recommended to prevent rubbing from the saddle or stirrups. Cowboy boots, paddock boots, and childrens western boots are available for purchase.
A4: WHAT NOT TO WEAR TO YOUR FIRST LESSON. Ripped up jeans! or jeans that drag on the ground. Horses commonly step on the ends without meaning to and trip you and much pinching happens in the saddle with the rips and tears in the jeans. SAFETY PINS ARE NOT ALLOWED. I was unaware that safety pins in ripped up jeans were such a popular fashion trend. It is a very dangerous when riding as a horse tends to run off and behave badly when poked by a safety pin. Pajama pants or silk slippery pants are also not allowed. unfortunately, if you arrive for your lesson without a helmet or in any of the above clothing, you will not be allowed to take the lesson for your own safety and the safety of your horse.
Q)2 Which is easier to learn English or Western?
A: I feel both disciplines in riding are equally difficult but equally enjoyable. I recommed Western to people who have a little more fear about riding as the seat is a bit more secure.
Q)3 My child has had a couple English lessons and doesn't like it can they swith to Western?
A: I usually recommend that your child stay with the same style of riding for a minimum of one month. As with any type of class or lesson, learning can be challenging and with practice and patience it gets much easier with time. Encourage your child to be persistant, it will set them up for success no matter what style of riding they choose later.
